Maison Margiela: Couture Surplus

Among renowned actors, fashion editors, and editors-in-chief, I once had the good fortune of attending a Christian Dior show under John Galliano’s creative direction. After that spectacular event, Galliano confidently led his models in a final procession, and I found myself seated in the front row, experiencing a revelation. It was then that I truly fell in love with fashion, determined to see as many shows as possible, immerse myself in every publication, and bring deeper storytelling into my own work as a style editor.

One night in Paris during PFW, among actors, stars, fashion editors, and editors-in-chief, I had the good fortune of attending a Christian Dior show under John Galliano’s creative direction. After that spectacular show, an art form in itself, Galliano confidently walked out with his models for the finale. Seated in the front row, I experienced a revelation. This was the ultimate fashion storytelling high.

Writing objectively about designer John Galliano can be challenging. His immense portfolio includes exquisite collections for his own label as well as leading design roles at Givenchy and Christian Dior. However, in 2011, his soaring career stalled following a controversial incident. After a period of relative quietness, in 2014, he became the creative director at Maison Margiela.

Watching this show online, my heart and mind went in fashion overdrive. This collection—one of the most dramatic of the couture season—also marked Galliano’s final offering for Maison Margiela. As he prepares to depart the house later this year, the fashion world is abuzz with speculation about his next move.
