Solace by Wing Shya: A Photographic Journey

Photography and film-related books have always been a big part of my collection—often leading me to search for the most elusive limited editions. In Hong Kong, I found so many different Wong Kar-Wai photo books. And then, suddenly, I came across Solace, the new release by Hong Kong photographer and film director Wing Shya.

Behind-the-scenes art photography

Wing Shya first gained global attention through his evocative behind-the-scenes stills for film director Wong Kar-Wai, capturing the dreamlike atmosphere of In the Mood for Love, Happy Together, and 2046. His iconic images go beyond typical “on-set” snapshots, reflecting the emotional visual poetry of Wong Kar-Wai’s cinematic world. This collaboration shaped Shya’s signature style—romantic blur, off-kilter angles, and moments of quiet intimacy—that still define his work today.

While Shya’s name is often linked to Wong Kar-Wai’s filmography, Solace is a testament to his personal artistic vision. The book brings together some of his most striking photographs, creating a visual narrative with an extra layer of hidden storytelling. Back in those days, Shya worked with Fujifilm, long before iPhone photography and digital previews were even an option.

In a time when behind-the-scenes content is instantly shared online, this carefully curated volume feels refreshingly physical. Turning each page is like stepping into a private world—one you can hold and take in at your own pace. Thoughtful typography, interviews, and, of course, the pictures. A perfect book for anyone who appreciates photography with a narrative and a romantic soul.
