Sander Foppele: The Art of Doing

Introduction

Part five of the Artists in Residence series introduces Sander Foppele, a colourblind artist whose work is defined by experimentation and joy. Known for his Living Gold series, Sander’s vibrant, pop-inspired paintings showcase his unique approach to colour and texture, revealing the playful energy behind each brushstroke.

The Joy of Exploration

“The one constant in my work is that it has to be joyful.”

Sander Foppele grew up surrounded by art supplies and books, thanks to his mother’s artistic background. Despite being colourblind, he was undeterred and began painting in 2013, drawing inspiration from figurative art and Pop Art. His Living Gold series, which took six months of trial and error to perfect, has become one of his most recognised works. He also runs open studio events in Rijswijk, showcasing a range of experiments and styles.

“Growing up, brushes and art books were everywhere. I’m inspired by pop culture—Disney, Warhol, big Hollywood movies—but I enjoy exploring any style that captures my interest. Ironically, I’m very sensitive to colour despite being colourblind.”

Sander’s creative process involves constant experimentation with new techniques and materials. He paints exclusively in his studio, sometimes with the canvas suspended from the ceiling. His unique approach often involves repurposing old curtains as a base for his paintings. “I only paint in my studio, often with the canvas suspended from the ceiling. A painting can take days, weeks, even months. I love oil sticks; they change texture when they warm up, creating unexpected lines. Usually, it’s that last subtle detail that brings the piece together.”

Sander reflects on the emotional connection to his work, especially during difficult times. “I’ve experienced both highs and lows in acting and painting. During tough times, I painted over red, jade green, or yellow backgrounds with black. It looked cheerful but came from a sad place. Now even black can feel uplifting. I don’t push myself to the brink anymore—life’s too short.”
