Artists in Residence: Six Dutch Creatives

Introduction

In this six-part series, I highlight six Dutch artists from diverse backgrounds and disciplines. Each opens the door to their studio for a closer look at their inspirations and creative processes. From painting to design, sculptures to storytelling, these personal accounts reveal what truly drives them to produce art that resonates.

“Making art is almost a compulsive obsession.”

Lieuwe van Gogh —son of filmmaker Theo van Gogh and a descendant of Vincent—doesn’t view himself as carrying on a family tradition. Instead, he’s building his own passionate style. For the past five years, Lieuwe has been painting celestial stars and demons in bold, unapologetic compositions. With international exhibitions on the horizon, he’s steadily carving out a name for himself in the art world. “My go-to material is acrylic paint from those old-school restaurant squeeze bottles—like you’d use for ketchup or mayo. That’s why my paintings have thick layers and chunky blobs. I always sketch first, then apply the first layer with a brush. I’ve only got one brush in decent shape now. And, of course, there are the spray cans.”

Lieuwe’s process isn’t about routine. He cranks up the music and dives in, no plan, just energy. “Sometimes it’s techno, and I end up dancing. The studio lets me blast the music loudly, which is crucial. In the morning, it’s soul music; midday, hip-hop; and if it’s a late one, maybe techno or French improv jazz. Music sets my mood. I almost always have a cigarette or some candy.”

For Lieuwe, this isn’t work—it’s what he does. “I plan to go bigger—like twenty-metre pieces. Though I use bright colours, there’s always a darker edge. I do see some parallels with Vincent’s mania for painting, but I’m not about to relive his story. After long days, I feel a bit unhinged, but I’m lucky to have supportive folks around me.”
